Von Robinson was born in Indianapolis, Indiana. VRiD began as Von Robinson's studio in Brooklyn, in 1999. Von had just graduated from Parsons School of Design and shown his furniture for the first time at The International Contemporary Furniture Fair. Philippe Starck sought to produce Von's work and it garnered international attention, leading to a number of European clients. Teruo Kurosaki, the Japanese design entrepreneur, was the first to produce Von's work, featuring his furniture at a 3-person show with Marc Newson and Karim Rashid during Tokyo Designer's Week, in 1999. The following year, his work debuted in Milan. In 2003, Von and his wife, Miho Suzuki, who trained as a furniture and graphic designer, partnered to form VRiD. The firm moved from Brooklyn to Wappingers, and that year VRiD was presented as one of 10 top up-and-coming design firms by Metropolis Magazine. Von has written about design for a number of magazines and lectures at design conferences and schools. He created the course, Poetics of Design: a systems approach to design thinking, which he taught at Parsons School of Design, in New York City.
