Tapio Wirkkala (1915 - 1985) was a pioneer of Finnish industrial art and design who gained international recognition in the years following the World War II. This was due to his broad aesthetic scope and his refined exhibition designs. Wirkkala was a highly versatile designer and artist. Hes designed products of glass, wood, porcelain, metal and plastics, created sculpture and also worked in graphic design. His works in plywood made him one of the frontrunners of Finnish modernism in sculpture.
